Description

Topic: The challenges and benefits of founding a company in a foreign country

Description:

Startup Weekend Kyoto Sessions is a series of live online interviews hosted by the organizing team during the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Every week, we will bring you a live event where one of the organizers will interview a local entrepreneur or activist, focusing on various different elements of entrepreneurship.

For our fifth session, we are going to be conducting our first interview in English with Kyoto's very own Thomas Bertrand, the founder of Bento&co and Ship&co. The topic will be on founding a company in a foreign land, the challenges and benefits of doing so. The interviewer will be Startup Weekend Kyoto facilitator, Sushi Suzuki.

Profiles:
Thomas Bertrand
An alumni of Kyoto University and Sciences Po Grenoble, Thomas has been in Japan since 2003. In 2005, Thomas started a blog that became a huge hit, and gave him the idea to start Bento&co in 2008, an online store selling Japanese Lunch boxes. With more than 10 years of ecommerce experience, Thomas has a deep understanding of E-commerce sellers’ needs and that’s for this reason he launched Ship&co. Ship&co is a SAAS and an API to digitize shipping processes. It’s the only online solution connected to the major Japanese shipping carriers APIs.

Sushi Suzuki
Sushi Suzuki is an associate professor at the Kyoto Institute of Technology and KYOTO Design Lab where he teaches and coordinates projects around innovation, design thinking, and entrepreneurship. He is the lead instructor for the nine-month globally distributed innovation program, ME310/SUGAR and the founder of Kyoto Startup Summer School, a two-week intensive program for aspiring entrepreneurs.
